Part III: Ladies and jewellery

The highlight of the ladies' and jewelled watches is the new Crash with a matching teardrop bracelet. I was sceptical when I first saw stock images of the watch, but in person it is beautiful.

The delicate teardrop links of the bracelet match the case shape very well. This is the first time the Crash is available on a bracelet, and Cartier has done a wonderful job. It is available in white or rose gold, in a limited edition of 267 each.

A fully diamond set version is also available in either colour of gold, and limited to 67 in each colour.

Les Heures Fabuleuses de Cartier is the name of the jewelled watch collection presented at SIHH. One of the most unusual models of the range is the Les Indomptables de Cartier. These are jewelled timepieces with a removable brooch.

The concept is simple, the brooch sits on top of the crystal and its pin runs through the watch and can be removed by pulling it out. The movement is a tiny quartz calibre, which allows the pin the space to go through the case. Three versions are available, depicted a frog, peacock or snake.

And Cartier features its classic big cat, the panther, on two of the jewelled timepieces. The first is the Panthère divine de Cartier watch which features a regal black and white panther.

More unusual is the Baguette Panthère watch, which has a small panther cub clinging to the watch. Several years ago a similar watch featuring a panda was presented. Both are equally beautiful.

And last year Cartier unveiled the Masse Secrete Panthere watch in white gold with a mystery rotor on the front in the form of a panther, this year it is available in rose gold.

And the mystery rotor now takes the form of a phoenix. The Envol d’un Phoenix watch uses the same movement with the phoenix-shaped mystery rotor. The case is white gold.

And of course the Fine Watchmaking line has several jewelled additions. The most spectacular by far is the Double Mysterious Tourbillon with full baguette diamond setting. It truly is spectacular.

And for those with a smaller budget the Mysterious Hours is available with diamonds as well.

Cartier had a strong year in 2013. Amongst the SIHH exhibitors, it was amongst the best in terms of breadth, complications and ideas. For me the highlights are the pair of mystery watches in the Fine Watchmaking line, the Crash on bracelet, and the little...

Part IV: An analysis of Cartier's 2013 collection

 By: SJX : February 17th, 2013-21:11
Cartier’s new collection presented at SIHH 2013 is notable not just for the various watches, but for a few trends that reflect the brand’s development as a watchmaker. One is the invoking of Cartier’s historical timepieces with the new Crash and Mysteriou...
