I would never buy any watch where the sales person adopts a hard sell approach. The watch should sell itself in the first pace and the role of the sales person is to provide me with any information I may not have or to speak about the beauty of the watch. My AD in the UK , Nathalie at the Cartier Paris Boutique and my friends working at the Patek salon in London have never ever had to hard sell a product to me. Perhaps they understand my passion for watches or perhaps that is not the approach they adopt anyway. In contrast, the dealers in Malaysia where I live now tend to adopt the hard sell approach as they are on commission whereas they are not so in the places I had mentioned. Discounts are aplenty in Malaysia for example but I do find the whole buying experience tarnished by the hard sell, poor product knowledge and after sales service. So for me, I have decided to make all my watch purchases in Europe. In the years to come when I look at a watch that I own, I will have that lingering special memory of the whole purchase and ownership experience and for me that is part the joy of watch collecting.
