'71 SS El Camino? . . .

. . . or Malibu? Hard to tell, Bill. In any case, you don't often see two muscle cars back-to-back anymore. Not like the old days, when they'd zip by all the time . . .

I thought cold-air hoods went out in '71, but . . .

. . . you're right - it's a '72 for sure. My memory ain't what it used to be ;-) . . .

I believe the last cold-air hood scoops (or cowls) from GM . . .

. . . were the Pontiac 455 HD's of '73 - '74. Pretty sure that Mopar dropped them after '72, and Ford after '73. Believe it or not, I used to know this stuff right off the top of my head . . .

A family car??? [nt]

I know the Pontiac will disappoint but the the Elco is the real deal.

 By: Bill : May 27th, 2018-17:49
The Pontiac is a 4 cylinder basically they cut a v8 in half. It is a 196 cubic in. The gear box is in the rear a transaxle and it has a rope drive vs a drive shaft. This was a Delorean design when he was a whiz kid at gm. ...

NO disappointment - that is a real technology showcase, in a timid shell

Convertible is a nice touch too! Mike

It has an amazing amount of interior room.

The achieve this because the is no central hump for tye drive shaft. Below You can see what they call the rope drive in the rectangular box ...

Please explain "rope drive".

I have no idea what that could mean. Don

A very thin, flexible shaft drives the car

 By: cazalea : May 28th, 2018-08:01
They call it a rope because it sags in the middle (like a jump-rope used by kids) allowing the tunnel to be much smaller than normal. From an engineering point of view, the shaft can be lighter (saving weight) because the transmission is integrated with t...

You knew . . .

. . . this was coming. ;-) . . .

GM called it Torsion Bar Drive; customers called it rope

 By: cazalea : May 29th, 2018-06:03
Engineering never would have called it “rope” in my opinion. But it was first of its kind, thinner than your thumb, and “rope” conveys the sagging in the middle bit. I found a relevant passage from its developer, the infamous John Z DeLorean who was respo...

That’s so cool 😎
