996 vs 997

 By: pongster : August 4th, 2020-04:51
I have always dreamed of driving (and owning) a Porsche 911 Carrera. Have not done either. Only been inside but didn’t drive. Childhood dream. My aspiration ever since. Planned to go looking when i turn 45 in two years as i gradually exit the watch buying...

Tiptronic

Hi, Both 996 snd 997 are good, depending on version and year, the only thing I would strickly avoid is tiptronic, which in my pov kills most of the driving fun. In contrast to pdk it is nit a double clutch, but a reagular automaitc, and a bad one as such....

Thanks for all the inputs

Very helpful. Will check out the cars and see if good enough. I already picked out a watch to get to pair with this - a Carrera Calibre 18 as both watch and car were named after the famous race - Carrera Panamericana.

I would pref the 997 . Because of a more modern look.

I had a 996 (manual )a few years ago l and when you really want one make sure the books of maintenance are all up to date , there are a few issues with that type of engines (996-997) .

I drove a tiptronic in early 2000s. It depends on your purpose/utility of buying the vehicle. Full use of that transmission requires some manual skills...

... It is still an automatic with a torque converter. I never tried revving or drifting etc with it. So not sure how much s/w interferes with it. newer tip systems have more checks and bounds to avoid the unnecessary. If preowned Double clutch is a safer ...

I just want a porsche.

My dream car. Hehe. Already got a matching carrera watch.

There is a reason why the 997 is worth a lot more

And that reason has to do mostly with the 996's inferior overall qualities. That said, there is no question about the PDK's superiority over the Tiptronic but if it was me looking, I'd even consider a 991 if I could stretch a little bit more.

Just checked both cars again

Clearly the 997.2 is the more superior speciment. Moreover, it only has 5Km on its odometer as opposed to 112Km for the 996. But is the difference worth USD75K? One friend is telling me to go for the 996. Just to practice as my first porsche and upgrade l...

997 will be a classic 20y from now

Today I'd go for a 997 with PDK. However, I went with the first Porsche tiptronic offered in a 911 for my 40th and got the 964 instead. Nothing wrong with the tiptronic and it's kick down switch. A blast to drive.

996

If you want a reason to justify a 996: engine sound is one of the best. Get a 996 4s widebody with xlf and you will never look back.

Not entirely true but you should do a search for "Porsche IMS issue" for the answers

By: India Whiskey Charlie : August 16th, 2020-05:28
You will find that the problem could be found up until approximately 2005 but retrofits and repairs have been made along the years.

That’s what i understand as well.

And not as much an issue now as there are outfits that can supposedly repair that problem i am told.

My plan really is to get my feet wet in Porsche with this 996

Hopefully i learn (not at a great cost) and know what i really like moving forward.

997

Because the front is better. The dash is better.

I know. The 997.2 is just handsome.

Looking at the 2010 again. His offer is USD126K. I countered with USD110K. He wont budge.

Thanks again to all
