My memories ...
My memories of Porsche here in the 1970’s were of a company that made practical drivers cars, ones that you could drive reliably every day. And cars that required a little skill because of that ‘sting’ in the tail (of the 911) that could catch you unaware.
Most of the Italian exotics had a reputation for being finicky and unreliable, difficult to maintain the tune and balance (with those banks of carburettors).
And the 911 has certainly evolved nicely. I still get a buzz when I see them on the road.
Not exactly answering your question, Thomas, but fun to daydream a little.
Regards,
Andrew
Ps. I think it was the 912E from the mid 70’s which had the VW engine. The original 912 from 1966 had the 90HP 1.6L 4 cylinder carried over from the 356SC. [Which I guess derived from the VW Beetle. J]

but I have to admit that one of the initial goals of my first job in Germany, late '70s, was to earn enough money to buy a 914. I never did, the money dispursed itself between my fingers, but in retrospect that 914 was one of the big steps toward corporat...

You know which 914 is ultracool? The one with the flat six built in ... I saw one a couple of months ago when i was hunting a P1800 for Nicolas, the seller of that P1800 suddenly told me; hey, i ve got a nice 914... wanna see it? The guy pulled the cover ...
