Is "too much quiet" a good or a bad thing?

HEADLINE -- We made this quiet ROLLS-ROYCE noisier!

Rolls-Royce did such a good job insulating the interior of the second-generation Ghost from outside noise that drivers who tested it became disoriented by the silence. "Bordering on nausea," said the car's lead engineer, Jon Simms. So his team did something few automotive engineers are ever told to do. They made the cabin louder. They recalibrated the engine, modified the sound insulation in the doors and lightened up the padding in the headliner. They also designed the rear seat frames and trunk components to vibrate at a particular frequency to create a low "whisper" sound. The end result is an interior that's (thankfully) only 1 decibel quieter than the sedan's first generation. The 2021 Ghost fights noise pollution with an aluminum frame that carries less sound than the old steel one, double-glazed side windows and lightweight foam lining the tires.

HEADLINE -- We made this noisy JAGUAR quieter!

Jaguar Land Rover revealed new noise cancellation technology that removes unwanted road and tyre sounds from the cabin and provides a quieter and more refined experience. The technology on the new 2021 F-PACE,  XF and Range Rover Velar, is capable of lowering unwanted noise peaks by 10dB and overall noise levels by 3-4dB. It's the equivalent of turning down the in-car sound system by four ‘steps’. This significant reduction in exposure to low-frequency noises up to 300Hz can help prevent driver fatigue on longer journeys. Fatigue affects the ability of a driver to deal with hazards or unexpected events, with tired motorists recording an average reaction time increase of 16.72% compared to those fully alert, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information: Research on the Relationship between Reaction Ability and Mental State for Online Assessment of Driving Fatigue.

IMAGINARY HEADLINE -- We give you the QUIET you REALLY WANT
We equipped the new Family Truckster with the latest in sound reducing technology. It listens to the road around you, and automatically generates an offsetting noise for all those stoplight panhandlers, loud H-D motorcycle exhausts, low thump-thumping from hip-hop music fans with huge amplifiers...

and yet we still permit the wail of a first-responder's siren or PA system to reach your ears.

That Rolls-Royce press release was so exaggerated...

As an individual with a lot of familiarity with Rolls-Royce products (although not the latest Ghost) I found the wording used in the Rolls-Royce Ghost press release to be just awful. Rolls-Royce's more recent cars are in many ways not as good as the previ...

This is why I love my hybrid so much...on full electric it is quiet and sometime this is what I need, and in full power mode with sport exhaust well it is a joy for all of us petrol heads! ...

Yes indeed! [nt]
