Sorry to hear about your experience....
Sounds to me like some "T&Cs" bind their hands.
May not entirely be the fault of the staff employed there.... i.e. if they were to put the potentially third-party battery back in then you could say that they were responsible for the battery... What I would look at is whether their quote includes replacing the battery... if it doesn't I can't see how it can be a problem for them to return the watch as it was provided as they're therefore not disputing that it is a problem.
Others here will know better than I.
All sounds like a mess in communication and may just need someone with a bit of nouse from the AP side to sort.

Always frustrating when you have to go through the more official lines to get the desired outcome (which was always the reasonable and fair one from the outset) but certainly not unique to AP - that however doesn't excuse! Hopefully they will sort it out ...
