Royal Oak 5402 - signed / unsigned crown - repost 2023

Jan 26, 2023,15:37 PM

just a short information:

i saw a report about 5402 in italien forum - it is a subsumption from a lot of different things, we can find in internet.

I can not read italien - so i can not judge the facts generelly.

Only thing i see - without italien language - is, that the the facts about the crown are - in my opinion - wrong.

The 5402 have had no AP -signed crown in no series at no time.

A, B, C and D-series all had (once - only perhabs changed to signed crowns by revision) the unsigned crown

(not AP-signet untill some number in C-series and D, like it is shown in this report).

I had three late D-series in my hands - all had original unsigned crowns!

Same applys for hands: All series - also D-series - had small hands.

regards

stephan

I have a 5402 B series from 1975/76 bought brand new in Geneva by my step father in 1976 and the crown is signed, it went for a total overhaul to AP Le Brassus in 2010 and all was confirmed as original!!! I am a little confused! Kind regards. Francois

of course...

a signed crown is also "original" - and specially in APs eyes, because if AP (or a authorizised dealer/watchmaker makes a revision at any time they change the crown at this modell. The reason is, that in the crown there is the blanket (or what it is call...

There still may be unsigned crowns available...

... my B-series went in for service last year with a broken winding stem and came back with a new plain crown. At least it looked new. Was sent to the factory in Switzerland.

if there are unsigned crowns available...

that means, that everyone should ask, who send his 5402 to revision, if it is possible to put a unsigned crown on the watch (if possible). Perhabs they found a box with crowns somewhere back in a rack in switzerland. Thanks for information Stephan

You are correct Stefan....

I have just check the invoice from Audemars Piguet dated April 2010 and yes, they do mention replacement of "crown, water-resistant, stainless steel, AP symbol". I think however that they should have given the "original" back to me!!!!! I'll ask them, but...

If there are evidences of D serial with unsigned crown we can suppose all the 5402 production was originaly equipped with unsigned crowns. There was no reason for AP to change it, given the limited number of production of the reference. The point is...are...
