Ironically, the very range and depth you point to as AP's strength contrasts with the way detractors of the brand focus on a perceived limitation in the brand's great reliance on mainly the RO and ROO lines.
To your question of what brands have great range and a capacity for "avant garde" work, I would say Cartier in particular as well as JLC both have this. I appreciate both for it, although I am not in the market for avant garde watches. Yet, a brand's capacity for this kind of work does enlarge the brand as a whole, which sounds like the point you are making and I agree with completely.
Enjoy your AP watches, AP is lucky to have such passionate purists!
