Aaaarrrggghh, AP!!

I love AP. It is my favourite watch brand to which most of my collection consists of AP.


My favourite polo shirt is AP branded and many of the social functions I enjoy attending to are also AP sponsored.




Unfortunately, I've just experienced my 1st AP service related set back and I would like to share my experience here.




This sad tale begins back on the 4th of June of this year. I told my AD that when my ROO Navy is held at a certain angle - one must be lying on his back with the watch pointed up at the ceiling - starting and stopping the chronograph functions causes the seconds counter at 12 o'clock to jump and skip beats.

The watch came back on the 27th of June with my AD telling me that 3 different AP Technicians could not find anything wrong with the watch.

Oh really?

I wanted to post a video about the symptoms plaguing the Navy but at the time, I trusted the Service Center to do a thorough check. Also, posting a video to YouTube would potentially publicize my problem "to the world" and I didn't want to do that.

Fine. AP was forcing my hand. Here's the video:




Chronograph problems



Focus on the seconds counter at 12 o'clock.

After releasing the video on the 16th of July, AP recognizes the problem and will replace the chronograph module of my ROO. Great!

Fast forward the calendar to the 12th of September. My ROO finally came back with a shiny new chronograph module. My AD says that thorough checks have been made and the watch is in ship shape (pardon the lame Navy pun).

This is the 2nd video I took after the repair. Again, focus on the seconds counter at 12 o'clock.

No this sucks and is unacceptable. You can\'t sell obsolete mechanical jewelry that malfunctions. The reason we spend so much money on these products is for our love and respect for the mechanical \'marvels\'. We will even endulge in all the marketing mum... 

Clearly someone didn't lie on their back and perform a simple check on this one either!

Best of luck getting this resolved. Bit disconcerting when you're yet to take the AP plunge and see issues like this that don't get re-mediated without unnecessary stress. You would think from a reputation perspective easier to bin the watch, start afresh... 

I still have very high regards for AP.

Despite this "hiccup" in service, I still see AP in a very positive light. I believe that no matter the brand, be it watch, car or even a computer, there will be 1 or 2 lemons out of a certain batch. I own 4 AP pieces; the other 3 have no problems whatsoe...

Alfred, thanks for coming back to update us. I must confess I'm a little bit confused. Do I understand correctly that AP considers the jumpy running seconds hand an acceptable situation? And does it affect the overall timekeeping of the watch? I don't wan... 

Normal timekeeping is not affected (as far as I know)

...though the thought has occurred to me since after the skip the running seconds does seem to pause for a second before continuing. Is this the 3126 automatically delaying itself after the activation of the chrono movement jumps it ahead? I honestly have...

I\'m not an owner of a ROO as yet, but the simpler RO, but I find this explanation from AP ludicrous, to be honest, and if this is what it is, then I know for certain that a ROO will never make it to my shortlist of watches to buy if ever I were to be loo...

I did manage to get a more definite reply from Mr. Steiner on the release of an integrated chronograph for the ROO and he said AP was working towards 2 years time. This skipping problem will not occur on a column wheel type chrono. I told both Mr. Steiner...

friends who had to go back and forth to the AP service center for different kinds of problems on their BRAND NEW ROO. May it be a special edition or not. but at the end of the day, they fix the problem. I dont know why cant they just quality control the p...

Alfred, I\'m sorry to hear this. We all know the ROO doesn\'t have an integrated chronograph movement. We also know they are working towards a new movement. But that doesn\'t make this kind of performance what you would expect, especially given the price ...
