Overhaul

By: AGLevi : April 22nd, 2017-11:21
I sent my 5402 to be overhauled in Le Brassus, through my local dealer. Obvious as it may be, I specified in advance (in writing) that they would only deal with the movement, and will undertake no refinishing. I received the watch yesterday. I am yet to s...

Ok. That's already a good point. Did you take few shots of your RO before the service?

I know that's easy to say that after but we all should do that for vintage watches before a service and, more particularly, a beauty like your RO. Best wishes Alkiro

I did not. It seemed obvious to me that they would knno what to do and what not to do. See my answer below to MichaelC. It was made clear that I am not interested in anything aesthetic, just maintenance of the movement.

Without knowing all the details, it is difficult to advise you.

Did you call the service center and confirm you were sending the watch in for very selective services? Did you keep the name of who you spoke to? If that were my watch, I would have been extremely specific and 1000% sure before sending it off. What exactl...

1. I did not call the service centre. I spoke to them through the dealer. It was agreed in advance, in writing, that they would do no refinishing. And I have AP Italy, in writing, saying that they would "not polish, and only intervene on the movement" (tr...

What I did with my AP RO 5402 (3 A series and one B series): specify very clearly "part-by-part" i.e. ....

..... what to do with the movement, what with the case, what with the dial, what with the hands, what with the date disc, what with the crown. On two watches we ended up with an agreed disagreement and I took them back and gave them to my godfather of wat...

Inconsistent.

On my RO, I asked them to replace the dial due to uneven oxidation, but they did not replace the hands (so not standard practice in my case...), so the dial glows but hands not visible in the dark. Not great..

I am not sure I follow

The overhaul has already taken place. I am not sure how to deal with the fact that they have done what they have clearly been asked not to do.

Hard to tell exactly what was done...

Since the lighting in the before/after photos is very different. But it certainly does seem like the hour markers were cleaned up. It may be the case that the bezel was touched up as well, there are some marks in the 'before' photograph that I don't see i...

I will try to take a better "after" shot [nt]

And I am not against the watch looking mint. The question is: at what price? Having luminous dials on a 40+ watch is not my taste.

Whenever I have sent an AP to the service center

I have received a very detailed report of what is to be done. AP will not start the service until the signed for is returned. Did you receive the service form?

UPDATE and more photos

Dear Forum, Thanks for all your inputs. AP responded to me that hands have not been changed, nor relumed. This sounds very strange to me, because before the servicing, the hands did not glow at all. And now they do. Does this make any sense to any of you?...
