Audemars Piguet

Yikes, I did it...

In my over 20 years of collecting AP, I never ever thought I would consider any of the jeweled / hype AP pieces. Up to this point, I generally tended to lean towards pieces with less frills, colours, and accoutrements - and certainly nothing with bright colours. I also don't enjoy precious metals anymore - wearing heavier watches feels like more a burden on my shrinking muscle mass. And, perhaps interestingly, I also never purchased a double balance as I considered it one of the biggest hype movements by AP, despite being offered some wonderful options along the way.

Enter the Rainbow Double Balance OW in WG. I got offered the option to acquire the piece this year - much to the strong recommendation of my boutique. I was a little shocked to hear that they would recommend this piece - why me? I never had this on a wishlist, and if anything never ever saw it in person. I even had an interest with the newer blue ceramic DB OW or the stainless DB OW. 🤷

Well, fast forward to today, when I got to see some models, including the Rainbow and the blue ceramic.

OMG - I definitely was blown away by the Rainbow - exemplifying some of the most extreme examples of AP's craftsmanship in an incredibly cohesive package. Meticulously set sapphire gemsetting, superfine frosting on white gold, and of course a combination of open-working with a wonderful canvas of inner angles fitted with an organic double balance wheel. And yes it's a little heavy at 235g, but unlike my RG jumbo at 200g, it wears incredibly well. I also appreciate the WG material as it seems a little more understated than its YG and RG brethren (yes, it's all relative).

Anyway, beyond that, it fits a really unique spot in my overall collection - having this piece really checks many boxes at once - and will be a lot of fun to match during the holiday season - and will pair well with my wife's frosted pieces.

Overall, a huge surprise that I actually gravitated to the Rainbow and added this to the collection! Looking forward to what is next with the recent announcements - I'm certain more exciting surprises are in store - and AP will be delighting even more collectors with what's coming next.

Cheers all!
Peter
