I don't think that we have to check shorts in any language. But when it is in English or German, than it is not optimal.
I think Lange for LS is a good solution.

I don't use "ALS" for that same reason.
I assume a few readers have negative associations to "ALS," and it costs me nothing more to type "Lange" instead, so that has been my choice. "Lange" is also unambiguous.
