A. Lange & Söhne

poor? no wonder ...

Stephen, I cringe every time I have to buy razor blades or almost anything up to - and beyond - a bottle of Talisker.

Sure, I would love to have the 31 day "Monat" just to see how accurate it can be, from day to day, with its 10 sec constant force "remontoir". And can I wind it by hand???

The RL even more than the PLM RL beats all hell out of my CS. I mean half a second or none is better than 2, 3 or more when you can't even hack the seconds.

My friend and business partner Dieter (what business?) is now wearing what used to be my Calendrier, of which I catch a glimpse of from time to time. What turned me off of it: got bored with the immense style and perfection of the day-to-day and month-to-month funcions. Still I get to see it, almost every day, to my joy, sharing the joy of the wearer, his joy, and almost every day on his wrist - next to a Yachtmaster.

For a right-handed person who wears watches on his left hand, if only to protect them, the Lange 1 was never or ever an attraction for me, and so it remains.

As for the Daymatic - why not go really Germanic with "Tagesanzeiger" - it strikes me as rather burocratic compared with the somewhat burocratic Calendrier, which is thinner and easier, and more diplomatic, to slide from a shirt cuff. Just the time, Madames et Monsieurs! and not the windup time and the truly huge date - which everone seems to love!

The Daymatic does this very well indeed! The arrangement of the days of the week make a VC Patrimony slightly absurd - but again a matter of taste and living-style.

Would Captain Kirk turn up with a Pt. Daymatic or an Antiqua or Opus 3 in Glingonia-land ? But there I am again, on this side of the fence.

As a Romanier, I would wear a VH Trio. Ha, ha.

But to WIND a Richard Lange and to WIND a RL PLM - they can't take that away from me!

Sorry, but I have to rush off to the shop to admire Dieter's Calendrier and he to - the Richard Lange today - unless you have a better idea.

Dein Freund,
Amery
