Dear friends,
In response to an earlier post some of you asked for a picture of the movement side of the A Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Minute Repeater Minutenrepitition.
Besides of sending the requested photo, which is not overly clear as I am not into cameras etc, I wanted to give a quick feedback on the experience I had after having this marvel for around 6 months.
The watch is great and very practical though the slide to learn what time it is requires quite a bit of a push and is with the rather slim profile more difficult to activate than the MRs from Patek Philippe. The gong which was at first a bit "sharp", I assume due to the platinum case, has become even more harmonious and is a pleasure to listen to.
The overall esthetics of the dial side and in general is very pleasing to the eye and as you can see from the photos one hardly notice the slide. The feeling and appearance is of a very nice dress and/or most purpose watch and just gives one pleasure when seeing it on one's own wrist.
In the beginning I found the edges a bit sharp but that is obviously the downside of being crisp and have either reduced over time or I have became used to it.
The movement side is fantastic and to watch the balance weal and the chiming mechanism work has a meditative aspect if one is into these kind of things.
I also find it fascinating that they have managed to get rid of the pauses for those tunes not needed.
From my perspective the only downside for me is that I have to leave it in the bank when travelling. Not because of security concerns, but because I most have business trips to areas with harsh weather conditions that do not work well with the semi-open design needed to allow the sound to leave this and other repeaters. The only watches I have that chime while being waterproof are an old memovax and the Grande Reveil from JLC, but these aim to wake you up, and do that effectively, but not to please your ears. I trust there is also an inherent balance to be made between an harmonic swinging coil and holding everything in place as needed for a travel watch for rough terrain. I have some friends that have the PP 5520, but they don't use these for travelling beyond the usual trips from one office to the next.
Anyway, this is getting a bit lengthy and of topic so let me summarise my experience after having this on the wrist for a good part of the last months: the ALR RL MR gives those that love minute repeaters a great pleasure, and those that don't, a fantastic looking watch that has a fluctuation of less than 2 seconds per day and awaits the owner with a very pleasant experience when winding in the morning. The only negative feedback I received so far was from my better half who was a bit surprised when I categorically refused to put the watch down over night to not miss the moment when I can ask it by a gentle stroke to sing the time in concerto with the early birds and/or the rising sun.
All the best and thanks for your attention.
