Is this a Joke?

A big corporation like Seiko doing this low copy cat stunt?

I couldn’t believe it when I was told then I saw it.

Mods, pls remove if inappropriate.

Update: found this at the bottom of their website but still, will Seiko not take action?

...2023 SEIKOAK *Seiko® does not manufacture any watches sold on this site, they are made with a combination of authentic Seiko® parts and aftermarket parts. SEIKOAK is not affiliated with, nor do we represent, Seiko®

...I don't think it's actually Seiko from Japan. Looks like a dodgy company appropriating their name and typeface...

I don’t know where you got this…

But Seiko “mods” are their own subculture. They frequently evoke or outright copy famous Swiss designs. I may very well be wrong, but I suspect that is what we are seeing here.

How can they use the brand's name? No copyright?

…has a disclaimer that they have no affiliation with the Mothership!

Not the same IMHO

In this case we have a fully original Casio watch extracted from its resin case and installed in a custom steel case (which is indeed of very high quality, I used to own one so I have a first hand experience on this) whilst in the "Seiko" case we have a f...

I'm no copyright Law expert, but for starters, I'm pretty sure that the injured party needs to sue here (and because of the fine print you saw on the company's site, that's likely only Audemars Piguet or Seiko -- not a customer).

In a few weeks from now, we'll know more about the limits (or lack thereof!) of the First Amendment when it comes to copyright Law. And (to simplify just a little) after "Bad Spaniels" gets decided, it might be enough for these people to find the name "Ca...

It's all about pros/cons, whether brands will like to spend the $$ and get returns. If suing this small brand and make them bankrupt doesn't pay for the legal team, it's no point.

Maybe big brands will just let these small ones go...thinking the market will know the difference and not cannibalize their sales.

Maybe, but I would see serious reasons of concerns if they let this go...I submit that many here qualify as 'reasonable persons' who 'exercise reasonable care,' and yet, quite a few initially thought this insanity was really produced by Seiko! ;-)

 By: FabR : June 8th, 2023-21:01
This is obviously not my area of scholarship, but I can't imagine similar folks can't be "convinced" to refrain from these practices by companies as big as Seiko or AP with little to no need to resort to litigation. Of course, the 'free market approach' i...

And it's been like this for many years. The mod market is too fragmented to put to sleep.

I’ve seen a variety of Seiko mods over the years.

 By: BigAppleBill : June 8th, 2023-20:36
They’re usually one-offs made by a segment of hobbyists who have access to a bootleg aftermarket parts bin. But these are different because they’re being produced in substantial quantities by a commercial enterprise. And while they represent an abominatio...

 By: jp884 : June 8th, 2023-21:29
All kidding aside, stuff like this doesn't even bother me. Maybe because it's not truly trying to pass as a direct imitation but more of a frankenwatch. It's not like those canal street LV bags and belts that are trying to pass as the originals.
