Sometime back in the early Eighties, Uncle Steve bought a black '50 Merc flathead coupe . . .

. . . from the original owner equipped with a rare dealer-installed option: a Paxton blower.  With factory badges, yet.  One of ~ 200.

After owning it for several years, he let it go for a few thousand bucks more than he had in it, just before the market shot up.

Never had a ride in it.  Saw it many times at his house and upholstery shop, but nary a road trip.

I visited him right after the sale.  He was bitter for two reasons: disposal was forced because he had only one garage spot and had just bought a new Cadillac, and because I never got a chance to ride in, much less drive, his piece of American history.  There were high-powered American cars before like Duesenberg and Cord, but the supercharged '50 Mercury was probably the first production muscle car for the masses.  And his was in never-restored mint condition.

You don’t get the same hp per dollar spent flathead vs sbc but they look and sound so cool. I have a 5 speed tremec so i have good power band and can cruise easily on the freeway despite all the rattling and bouncing. I have another model A Roadster with ...

a little less HP is well worth it just for the cool factor of having a flathead . and like you say with the 5 speed you are always in the power band , nice !! roadster with the 383 , wow that is serious , got to be careful driving that .

I completely agree with you !...

Open air and a flathead. Enjoy your beauty! John

Real old school build just like in the 1950's. Two fuses to run all the electrics and that's one too many.

Had this one since 1981. This last build we swapped the 1930 frame for a more sturdy boxed pinched 1932 frame. ...

I prefer the yard because when you kneel down into a bolt it goes into the grass instead of penetrating your kneecap ... how do I know?

Love it! [nt]
