Good point. It's a step in the right direction.

I refuse to believe that the future of the car is nothing but gloom, doom, and absolutist solutions. The electric sports car is a big step forward, and I believe that a $50,000 roadster can't be too far beyond the horizon whether it comes from Tesla or a traditional automaker. Electric solutions don't solve the infrastructure-use challenges of the automobile (think cities, exurbs, sprawl), but even considering their manufacturing environmental impact and the power stations that charge them, electrics are a big step forward.
I've owned sports cars, performance sedans, V8s, electrics, hybrids, and SUVs, and I'm convinced that owners of all the foregoing will have a genuinely enjoyable electric or hybrid drive option in the near future. In the end, the real surprise may be how many of the breakthrough products wind up coming from GM, Daimler, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, and other legacy automakers rather than Tesla itself. The iPhone was a momentous and society-shaping product, but 11 years later, most iPhone-style smart phones are not made by Apple but by Asian rivals.
Best,
Tim
