we did not have one of those. Any advantage over simple bergeon lyre poising calipers, which
we used for wheels, and balances?

The exotic truing tool belonged to a student
It's a great tool that makes truing easier because of the stable base and adjustability, but obviously not necessary to do the job. A luxury tool. :-) _john
