Nick did a video on 10 tools you should buy (inside here)

At the least you need some proper screwdrivers, a strap removal tool, a case-back tool, several tweezers, and a place to set the watch so it's safe.

Because I have lots of Seikos, I learned that Seiko makes tools for the bench that are less expensive than the Swiss ones but also perfectly adequare. Here is my bracelet holder (underside holds the tool bits) and a small hand bracelet pin pusher. And the obligatory hammer (needed occasionally).

This tool holds the watch still on the bench and if the watch is flipped over, it's perfect for holding the watch while you are unscrewing its caseback. Better than trying to hold it in the palm of your hand (and safer)

Finally, this one is designed to take off the snap-type casebacks. You carefully screw in the knurled knob, which engages the little pusher against the watch, then press on the top blue tab, which twists and pops open the back.

Frankly this is the least successful of the Seiko tools - I prefer to use a single-edge razor blade or a case-opening knife. For Rolex, Omega and other brands you may need special tools, as shown here.

My only caution is don't buy a $39 set on eBay to work on a $8500 watch.

Here are other tools he mentions - a movement holder (many types), Rodico or Bostik putty to clean things, a place to put all those tiny parts when you don't finish late at night,

Hand remover tool, hand setting tools, caliper to measure case and lugs without scratching your watch, and a loupe.

Do you have what it takes to open up a watch (without ruining it)?

We have to be sure you will do it without damaging the watch or losing any of the pieces, so here's a tutorial. This is a follow-up to the screwdriver post a few days ago, it's a brand-new video posted last night by Nick Hacko in Australia. (FYI - I have ...

Thank you for this post.

Do you have other posts concerning what tools one should buy to start opening up a watch? I feel I need to at least buy something to hold my watch down when I change straps.

I would typically buy Bergeon to be safe, but their tools sometimes rival prices of accessories. Let me analyze your suggestions and go from there. Thank you!

A source for some of these
