ref 4570 , balck gilt dial on guilloche

Vintage VC's black dials are very rare, and quite a few on the market are refinished dials . I didn't buy this watch, I'm just discussing it here . I hope more members will participate. 1.The photo on the left is not good enough, but you can see that the minute scale is indicated by dots. Most of the white dials I have seen before use metal dots to indicate the scale. And this black dial dot is gold electroplating, using the gilt process, under the paint on the upper layer of the dial. 2.In the picture on the right, you can see that the caseback outside and lugs obvious scratches and abrasions , and the daily wearing time was relatively long. According the structure is not waterproof, combined with the production of this watch in the early 1950s, it is difficult to ensure that the dial is in good condition for nearly 70 years. But the picture on the left vaguely shows that the dial condition is much better than the case.

3.Check the signature and compare with the ref 4578 which used the same case shape. In my experience, the white dial's signature which on the rectangular part, signatures all used enamel letters. Because of the special craftsmanship on the black dial, gilt used instead of enamel. 4.The minute scale in right still used metal dots, which were in the lower layer of the dial surface , chiseled through the surface and exposed, showing that it protrudes from the surface.

5.Compared with other brands that use gilt dials, such as Rolex and Omega, most of the dials have been discolored due to the long time and the non-waterproof case. especially the waterproof Rolex , dial also guilloche, and the color of the guilloche part was particularly discolored severe. 6.Please note that ref 4726 was sold at Phillips Auction, the one also used metal dots for the minute markers.

The above 6 points are my analysis conclusions. The dial of this watch is high probability redial .But because of that I have not seen the real thing, it may be an original . I don't know if any members have seen the original V&C used a gilt dial on guilloche , used metal dots or gilt dots. I would be very grateful if you could share photos and advices.

The use of black dials on V&C watches was noted in the publication Secrets of Vacheron Constantin, which refers to both galvanizing and electroplating. Galvanization would produce the best results on a smooth dial and electroplating is ideal on a guil...
