I find Les Masques to be like some pieces of modern music: well concieived, well constructed, and interesting in a theoretical way, but the reality (or perfomance) just leaves you a little cold.
To read the performance or liner notes of a piece of music by Elliot Carter, for instance, I would expect to be moved by a performance. Yet, with rare exceptions, when I hear his music I am left wondering what all the fuss is about (and I am a trained musician who can hear the technical machinations at work).
With Les Masques, like with Carter's music, I have an intellectual understanding of what is going on, but I am not moved by it emotionally. I think that Vacheron Constantin has had much more effective integrations of art and horology with watches such as the Mercator, Sputnik, Great Explorers, and even the Metiers d'Art series for the 250th anniversary, which uses the same layout as Les Masques, but is based on the seasons of the year, which are based in time and are more naturally at home in a watch.
