Thanks to the efforts of the Library of Congress, who reached out to VC for some information, we now know this watch was purchased in Freud's home country of Austria in 1912. One wonders how Freud acquired this watch. One theory is that it was a gift from a grateful client but, without a dedication engraved on the cuvette, I am not convinced. Equally interesting would be knowing if Freud purchased the timepiece for himself. What event did it celebrate and why did he chose V&C?
The search continues for more clues.

15 March 2022: The Freud Museum of London, holders of the Certificate of Origin for Freud's watch, recently responded that, although they searched their archives, they are unable to locate any correspondence or journals by Freud circa 1912 which make mention of this watch. The Curator noted that, although Freud kept a personal journal later in life, that didn't start until 1929. Alas, this avenue of inquiry appears closed.
