When looking into past UN catalogues ...
... the issue is simple: Only complicated and very elegant and delicate watches are rated to 30 or 50 meters, all others at least to 100 meters, all watches of the Marine collection 200 and 300 meters. But then, all sportive watches also had luminous elements for nighttime legibility. Only exception was the original Freak, which was not watertight at all.
Personally, I am abolutely fine with 30 meters for an everyday watch which does not come into contact with water other than a rainshower. Normally, these have fine straps which I also don't want to risk by soapy water when washing my hands or washing dishes.
However, most of the time I wear watches I don't feel sorry about when hitting a doorway, and these are rated to 100 meters at least.
