Despite being familiar with Rilke, I had never read this letter before. It certainly arrives at the same teachings, with a comparable sensibility to Fromm. Fromm's conclusions in the book of young (immature) vs old (mature love) were summed up as 'I love you because I need you' vs 'I need you because I love you'.
