Walking on Banker's Hill, Part 1

The Banker's Hill neighborhood in San Diego is just "up the hill" about a mile from "down" town. We started in the morning as docents in a large house that was built in 1889; it was the first large home built this far "out of town" and was constructed in just one year, using some craftsmen and materials left from the completion of the Hotel del Coronado. The house was briefly owned by the governor of California, before one clan occupied it for 78 years.

My wife was on the porch controlling the flow of folks on the tour of houses and gardens, while I stood in one of the public rooms, chatting with visitors and making sure they didn't pick up anything and walk off with it.

All the pillars in my rooms were carved with floral motifs from the surrounding area

Here's the native Matilija poppy which regular readers would have seen last week on our walk in the canyons, from which the carvers got their pattern. HERE IS THE LINK

After our stint in the big house, we joined the walking tour in Banker's Hill, making our way to 10 sites. The first was a cool place whose crafty occupants went crazy during Covid, decorating all their fences and walls.

Octopus's Garden still in progress.

The next house exhibited their flower arrangement skills

then we went to a community garden whose charter was to beautify the neighborhood rather than grow vegetables.

A few more big houses came next - these were just walk-by, not walk-through - and we cruised past them fairly quickly.

but did take a good look at the gardens.

I am looking at the flowers, not those terrible internal combustion machines in the foreground here, even though my feet were getting sore and I could have used a ride..

I was alert enough to notice the rodents at my feet.

The flowers WERE really nice, and

so they deserved pollination.

My wife fell in love with the ambience of this outdoor kitchen and dining area -- I'm afraid this walking tour will cost me a bundle...

Citrus was everywhere in this garden.

A bossy little bird with no fear told us to keep moving along.

Please continue onto the next part of our walk, after you enjoy the back of this flower which was even more beautiful than the front.
