Today would have been Peter Green’s 76th birthday.

Extraordinary blues guitarist who replaced Eric Clapton in Mayall’s Blues Breakers and then formed Fleetwood Mac and led the band in their first iteration.

A “tone God” of whom B.B. King once said “he’s the only one who gave me the cold sweats “.

Among many other songs he is the writer of Black Magic Woman. Mac’s version is on their first album.
It should be added that Green’s use of “the’Burst”, a 1959 Les Paul Standard shown in these pictures, did as much for their reputation as the “Stradivarius “ of electric guitars as any other rocker. His guitar, “Greenie” is considered the most valuable vintage guitar ever. It’s presently owned by Kirk Hammett.

I wasn't aware Black Magic Woman was a Peter Green tune, either. I thought . . .

. . . it was Santana's. Kinda like All Along the Watchtower ; everyone knows Jimi's version . . . . . . and everyone also knows how startled he was after learning it was originally a Dylan song. 😌

I thought the same!

Here’s a little bit of trivia, and rock history, for you.

When Green was with Mayall he wanted to become a songwriter. He asked Mayall for help in how to go about it. Mayall suggested he take a song he liked a work off it/use it as inspiration. Green was a fan of the Chicago bluesmen; particularly Otis Rush, who...

John Lennon said in a quote shortly after Abbey Road release "that's where we pretended to be Fleetwood Mac for a few minutes" having Sun King on his mind. Not a bad compliment.
