The 'art of shaving'
Using an unguarded razor does involve a learning curve. Once straight razor shaving skills are mastered the next important task is refreshing/honing/stropping the razor to maintain its keen edge.
Maintenance skills are overall not hard to learn with enough of practice. The rewards are a 'zen-like' shave that cuts down beard and hair stubbles closer than any multi-blade modern razor or electric razor — and achieve what wet-shavers refer to as BBS (baby butt smooth) shave.
Through a watch collector friend and fellow wet-shaving enthusiast I was introduced to a 'honemeister' who taught us how to maintain razors properly. A honemeister can sharpen anything from straight razors to samurai swords — though with swords the technique is not to sharpen the sword, but polish the metal edge to such a high level that the swords become very sharp.

When I was in undergrad, the barber I went to did the hot towel/warm shaving cream then to the straight razor. Scary at first but he had surgical precision and always did a smooth cut. It's a pretty cool feeling once you shave this way, wouldn't you agree...
