When I was in undergrad, the barber I went to did the hot towel/warm shaving cream then to the straight razor. Scary at first but he had surgical precision and always did a smooth cut. It's a pretty cool feeling once you shave this way, wouldn't you agree?
Do you sharpen your own blades? That is a technique in of itself!
