“Argiope is a harmless colorful orb-weaver spider with stripes across its pointed triangular abdomen. The spectacular spider is easy to spot in gardens. It sits in the middle of its intricate web in a St Andrew’s cross shape. This spider measures 0.3” to 0.5” (8 – 12 mm) long.”
There are many varieties— I think these two are quite different from each other but equally scary!
“The average orb web is practically invisible. The visible pattern of banded silk made by Argiope is pure white, and some species make an "X" form, or a zigzag type of web (often with a hollow centre). The spider then aligns one pair of its legs with each of the four lines in the hollow "X", making a complete "X" of white lines with a very eye-catching spider in its centre. The zigzag patterns, called stabilimenta, reflect UV light and act as shock absorbers. “
