“Woo makes the motion … seem like flower petals drifting in a breeze, and his scenes of gunplay are almost like a dance.”
I couldn’t agree more. My first introduction to Woo’s work was actually “Hard Boiled”, so that is the film that burns brightest in my mind. The contrast of the beauty of the balletic choreography with the violence is quite mesmerizing. As are the long continuous takes and the visual imagery such as the doves. Jaw dropping stuff in its day, but a little hard to go back and revisit it with all that has come since such as Matrix and a myriad of animated computer games. Still, it was great to be there at the beginning.
Thanks for the heads up with “Equilibrium” – I haven’t seen it but will keep an eye out for it.
