TimeOut

Discretion is the key thing

Only once have I been asked "What do you think you are doing!?

That was in a rough neighborhood and I was taking an interest in a Mustang on the front lawn. The owner thought I was going to complain to the city about his eccentric parking arrangement. He said several neighbors had already done so. I explained I was interested in the car itself and we had a nice chat for a few minutes. So that ended well.

We walk around with camera obviously in hand, not hiding anything. We stay on the sidewalk. I rarely point the camera at anything until I am ready, then a quick snap and we move on. I think it helps that we're walking together, in casual clothing, I'm not just lurking and shooting repetitively at one house or with a clipboard taking notes.

I have two explanations prepared should I see people taking an interest:

1. I am taking pictures for friends who are architects in another part of the country, so they can see SoCal styles, which is true as several regular readers here have told me they learn from and enjoy the images.

or if we are looking at the plants,

2. My wife here is a member of the Pt Loma Garden Club and we are taking pictures of plants she can use to project on a screen, as a challenge members to identify at the monthly meetings. Also true.

If we see someone in the window or working in the garage, we just walk on by. Only once did I totally misjudge a photo, and it was because I was 100 yards away and couldn't see clearly what I was shooting at.

Here's an inquisitive sort of photo ... "there's something going on under here...look at those rear tires"
