When things don't go as planned, revise your plan

We had walking plans that went awry: streets under construction, steepness deterred us, weather and lighting unremarkable, etc. etc. But we finally found a very old neighborhood and a few interesting sites.

San Diegans will know El Indio, a famous Mexican restaurant east of the airport, south of Old Town.

Streets are steep, many are 1-Way, and/or Dead End. So we just parked and walked until we got too tired of the hills.

The neighborhoods varied from pristine to positively grim.

For example, how would you like to park your Bimmer on this driveway? And the Merc behind it?

On this apartment building there were lots of wire fences and railings, but no gate. The sad old dog showed no sign of wanting to go anywhere, anyway.

A retired Baja Racer, judging from the racing seats, roll bar inside, and quick-release spare taking up the entire back cargo space.

To show you some contrast, this house was on one corner, directly across from

this giant modern house

which took up about half the block.

And was next to this small but freshly-painted home (but I would have gone for a roof before paint!)

The next block was taken up by 4 newish units (green one to the left, not shown).

Across the road we saw that all the properties held 3-4 units. I wonder if there was a population explosion back then? Probably pre-War (WWII).

Notice the arrow I put onto the photo?

I saw a Navy cruiser pulling into the harbor, and was able to get my zoom out quickly enough to catch it.

Looking away from the harbor is a steep canyon. We were walking over there on the other side, about a month or two ago. I will put the link in here  Walking with Smokey & the Bandit

Older homes tend to have interesting plants, we've noticed.

Seiko Diver is prepared for the mist which is starting to drip on us.

Maybe someone was reading the Bible for a quiet time and got distracted, leaving it behind.

One of the folks planting in the field perhaps?

I think I will put the rest into Part 2. PS Here is the same canyon with plantings, from the Smokey walk on the other side.

In the above picture on the left, you see a white building. Here it is - beautifully symmetrical apartments.
