Hiking On A Helix, Part 1 Homes

Today we went out and walked on a mountain, in an area where we had driven but never walked. We put an offer on a house out here, several years ago, but didn’t pursue it. The roads are narrow, steep and there are no sidewalks, so you have to chose the lesser-traveled lanes (and be ready to step off the road). We were rewarded by clear skies, good sightings, and friendly conversations.

The general location is inland 15 miles and a bit north of downtown. We got off the highway when we could see clear skies above us and fog beneath.

I’d like to start with a few of the homes - keep in mind these steep, eastern-facing slopes were developed between the 1940’s and 70’s. The west side of the mountain was built upon earlier, as it faces the ocean and city. Anything newer is a remodel or new construction on an old lot. Bearing that in mind, here we go, looking up the hill:

Can you say “Cantilever”? (earthquake, hard rain’s gonna fall, etc.)

Too many oranges on their tree:

Big house!

There are plenty of long, low, California adobe-like homes.

Here’s generally what those houses are looking at:

Now looking out.

Southwest

To the West, there’s the pesky marine layer and fog that forced us 15 miles inland today.

Now looking to the East again.

Now, some architectural details that we saw along the way:

BLOCKS

A favorite building material from the period.

ROCKS
A dominant theme, as you will see

ART

If you have the time, please don’t go without finishing Part 1 and seeing Part 2. You won’t be disappointed. It’s only just past 9:01 on my Credor Mode Spring Drive Moon Phase

NOT ALL of the homes were on hillsides with views.

This is part of a massive, beautiful estate.

Because this is an expensive part of the suburbs, some of it non-incorporated, the homes are larger than in “the city” and you get more for your money.

Some new construction.

Those are too risky for me. I prefer my feet on solid ground.

Please go to Part 2.
