Autumn Colors Walking

We hit the pavement this morning, walking to get away from some construction activity near home. We headed for a neighborhood we haven't explored for 4-5 years.

Autumn colors (rare around here) were evident on this great house that straddles the corner.

Looking to the right (South) we see downtown and the bay sparkling in the sunlight.

Hearing a buzzing, I looked up. What a mess.

We got out from under this pole and looked Southwest, where the haze was just obscuring our view of Mexico.

The pyracantha berries are a sign that Christmas is on its way (also there was a guy stringing lights on the house). IT'S TOO EARLY.

We walked to the end of the block, where the street ended and the stairs continued downhill. These are about 100 years old (ancient for SoCal neighborhoods).

At the end of the block we walked a bit in the shady coolness, and found this long-abandoned brickwork / outdoor kitchen or BBQ.

Spinning around to the South again we had a different view over some newer homes and the bay.

This house nearby had a front yard fountain, pools, fireplace and outdoor kitchen. Quite brave to have that all in front, but it's a dead-end, remote location.

Bees? I don't see no stinkin' bees!

We came to a dead end and a truly enormous tree. Not the sort of thing you find in new developments.

We almost expected to see Tarzan come swinging past us on a vine!

Leaving the wilderness, we went back to a more conventional block. Well, that's if you are in Southern California where Porsches, McLarens, Ferraris are commonplace. My wife headed for the tiny free library while I (of course) scoped out the Lambo convertible.

There were many succulents in this garden.

As well as Plumeria. No autumn in this street!

Ah, here are those busy bees we were warned about! They took no notice of me and my iPhone camera pressed up against the flower stalk.

I thought it time for some architectural variety photos... here is a standard 1940's American design

Art deco meets Spanish which bumps up to Craftsman.

and California/Spanish again

Just a few yards away, the white fence says Middle America.

One more typical home that filled California in the 50's and 60's - the ranch style (now with 2 Teslas).

The blooming tree across the street was distinctly unusual ... it's called Red-Veined Flowering Maple or Callianthe.

A tiny Diner that we saw in a front garden.

Climbing roses over the front gate / trellis are a nice touch on this white house. (Their paint looks as aged as the paint on my house)

Looking Southeast from this sidewalk we see two flights landing -- one several miles away on the far end of the runway, and the other on the street nearby.

As we walked back towards the car we saw that a wild critter (apparently well-mannered) has left a deposit on a convenient leaf, so we picked it up and put it in the dog-walkers container nearby.

I checked my watch and saw it was time to go home. BTW, this is the BEST INTEGRATED DATE DISPLAY ever!

Thanks for walking with us.
