You pose a difficult question....
If you are after something that is highly cost effective, accurate and reliable, then go for new technology. Let me put it into car terminology.....if you want reliability and value for money, go Nissan.
But, what I want when i get into my car is a different feeling. I like the solid clunk that the door makes. i like the fact that the steering wheel is made of leather and feels like quality workmanship. I like the fact that when the engine revs, it feels like the demons of Hades have been released. I like the sound and feel of that.....and I am more than happy to pay a premium price for that feeling. Ferrari...Porsche....Aston...they all fall into that category. Are they better...dollar for dollar than the Nissan? The answer depends entirely on you.
For me, the answer is clear. When i drive my Nissan down the road, I feel like Mr. Bean. When I drive the Aston, i feel like Bond.
Same is true for Rolex. It is a quality piece if mechanical engineering that will last a lifetime. As it sits with you over the years, it becomes a part of every day. Lets not be silly here....its not a friend or a confidante...its not something that gives you emotional support or advice. It is a watch...just a watch. But....for a watch....it is special.
I am not taking the same tack as the other guys here. I can see that you sense that you might be missing out on something by having a more ordinary watch.....your comments seem to suggest that you are concerned about value....but actually, passion for watches isn't just for people who can spend money without worrying about value. This is a large amount of money and it is perfectly natural to have concerns. I have a different suggestion for you....
If you buy a brand new GMT, you will see it depreciate....probably 30-50% over the coming 5 years or so. Why not go for a vintage GMT.....a Fat Lady GMT from the early 2000s.....out of production....have hit all their depreciation....totally reliable..... beautiful to look at.....probably won't fall in price from here.....
In your shoes.....that is what i would do.
