Rolex Day-Date platinum review
Happy to share my latest arrival: a rolex day-date platinum. I was looking for something truly special and I have
always admired the platinum day-date as both being discrete yet exclusive.
The first decision I had to face was about the dial: with or without diamond? I was initially drawn to the
traditional one with stick-markets. The dial colour is the typical platinum ice-blue that makes the watch very
special:
I have noticed a substantial colour difference in the diamond version: it is a more pale, muted ice-blue.We did check in several catalogues and dial examples and the reasonable assumption is that the rolex ice-blue
color changed recently or the diamond version uses a different tone of ice blue ?
The watch is brand new from the rolex boutique - there were also wondering about the difference (rolex-experts please let me know what the correct assumption is!) but they were sure that this was simply labelled, like the non-diamond version "ice-blue"
the different tone of ice blue makes it very interesting and, even with diamonds, somehow discrete:
So I did go for the diamond one! At natural light the more muted tone of the ice blue is more noticeable:
Back to the review: at this price point you can buy many interesting watches. A dual-tone Patek Nautilus and really you have a lot of options. So why go for the platinum day-date rolex ?
I already own other watches in the "other" segment (Patek and Lange) and this might be unusual as I have seen more people
moving from rolex to patek, vacheron, AP, Lange etc. than the other way around ?!
I think that this watch -- and day-dates in general -- are very versatile and pretty much close to perfection. It is
a watch that you can wear with pretty much everything, is automatic, a chronometer and has two of the most useful
complications - the day and the date.
It is also widely recognisable yet the platinum version remains fairly special and exclusive. It fits very well on my wrist
and it has something special that I might not have found in other brands.
The ice-blue (in this case a lighter, more muted ice-blue) is very interesting. I am intrigued by the choice to reserve this dial only to the platinum version.
with different lighting the dial might appear light green or even light grey:
the bracelet is, like in pretty much every rolex, spectacular. I wasn't sure about the weight factor but I am already getting used to the platinum and is certainly a great feeling on the wrist !
Thanks for reading and feel free to share your views on the dial and the watch!
