Our 52nd Anniversary…
On June 4th, 1968, my Father presented this watch to me upon my graduation from the 8th grade, as I was headed to one of the premier boarding schools for high school in the fall. The watch remains with me to this day as a cherished mile-marker of my life. Looking back, I should write a book about what this watch has seen with me.
So, after 50+ years, here are some thoughts:
On the plus side…
Over all these years, the watch has never failed me. As long as I wear it, it has never stopped running. It has never leaked water and has only required what must be termed as minimal and reasonable maintenance. Yes, I have cracked the plastic crystal quite a few times (it never leaked), and destroyed a couple of the Oyster bracelets, but the watch has been through everything with me. If the Swiss ever build a car, I will be first in line.
Some regrets…
First and foremost, I was looking forward to passing this along to our only child. However, God in heaven had other plans for him. He has gone ahead; the watch remains.
Next, I had the watch overhauled in 1978 by Rolex in NYC and unfortunately had the original bezel, dial and hands replaced. Looking back, I wish I had retained those items.
Also, I sold what was left of the original riveted Oyster bracelet to a collector in Japan. We learn from our mistakes.
A few observations…
Always be thankful for what you have in your life, especially the people. Every day is a gift. And never forget that life can change “In A New York Minute”.
Buy only top-quality products whenever possible. If it is an important purchase, save up your money until you can get the best. Buy it once and don’t look back.
And finally, if you cannot take shower or a swim with your sports watch, it is not a sports watch. Call it whatever you like, but it is not a real sports watch (AKA a tool watch). Sure, I have an AP RO, but it never gets wet. It’s a luxury watch, not a tool.
All the best to you and yours… HEO
