Historically speaking, you had several bulky watches which were real tool watches.
Just one brand: Panerai, with its 47 mm to 60 mm watches, while this Rolex has a small 43 mm...

I do not find the DSSD too thick, I actually find myself forgetting that I am wearing it and I had to get used to its small 43 mm diameter. The only exceptions is when I have to work on one of my cars but in those cases it is not allowed to wear any watch...
