It is frustrating. Unfortunately, based on personal experience and what I've heard it is not that rare.

More often than not I've had Rolexes coming from service with additional scratches on the caseback, lugs, or bracelet. Generally these seem to have come either from opening the caseback or from removing/putting back the bracelet (which both are generally done by Rolex watchmakers, by the way). But once the 'damage' is done, what can you do? Ask for a polish? 🙄
It's the same story with resizing the bracelet of a new watch as well. Sometimes this has been done by the sales staff, sometimes by a Rolex watchmaker employed by the AD, but most often there are scratches on the bracelet or small damage to the screw heads. I generally try to do the resizing myself to avoid this, but more and more the ADs are insisting that the resizing be done by them at the time of purchase.
I guess many people involved in the watch industry tend to treat the watches as a commodity, and care far less about something like scratches than we as the owners.
This seems to apply even to regular watchmakers working for the brands.
