on balance it seems a bit risky buying such a watch, especially given the premium being sought, especially if it's only 'probably' genuine and probably never sold or delivered by Rolex as this gives it a sort of curious no mans land status I think.
It's a shame as it does seem a little special, but perhaps the novice should stick to safer waters.

All the ref. 5514 is for Comex only, with or without Comex logo on the dial (about 450 untis) yes, you can find sub number caseback engraving also on the "no-logo" 5514. btw. there are also 5513 comex with logo, 5513 no-logo with HEV (really rare) and eve...
Civilian 5514's
about 4 years ago, some "civilian" 5514's appeared on the market. Correct watches with HEV, but no Comex engraving. IMHO these watches have been "put together" with spare 5514 cases. Just my 0.02 cts.
This is what confuses me with vintage Rolex pieces.

a watch with service papers identifying it as a 5514 and with a serial number dating it to 1977 but with no comex markings on the back or dial? Were there such watches? Are they 'franken watches' or do they count as genuine 5514's? This is very scary for ...
