I was curious to hear other people's views on the vintage daytonas, and specifically the Paul Newmans. It seems to me that there is no way of telling just how many PN dials there were in various references. Supposedly, some 20% of the 6239s ended up with ...

I have in mind estimated production numbers that appeared in an old article by M. Pisani. He mentioned more or less 250 "Oyster" dials and about 1000 "non Oyster". But these are rough estimates. Cheers Jeff

so there were a lot more of the 39, 40, 41 and 62s than there were 63, 64 and 65s....suggesting that the latter were rarer? But what i am getting at is, over time, some of you guys must have seen many many PNs. 100s even? I cannot remember how many i have... 

Given the huge interest and rise in importance in PN Rolex (not only in monetary terms) I think this topic should be re-opened and debated. I am looking into a 6262 PN Daytona and have begone doing research which led my interest in knowing the production ...

about that one. Watch collecting is very odd. I think the oddness comes about as you learn, not only about the material in terms of history, but learn about yourself. I am just in the beginning and excited where the journey takes me.

As Nicolas is prone to saying, the train left the station quite some time ago. When i first bought a PN, I was more than a little concerned about how much i was paying. Basically, the difference in price between a plain-vanilla 6239 and a 6239 with a PN d... 

You make many valid points. In fact the point list you have made- I did the same in my head. Your excercise is saving me money ;) I don't like screw down pushers- they are so bulky. So no Oyster PN for me thank you. Solves a big problem already. I do like... 

the amount of 6239 , 6263 and 6265 steel cases produced is the same. also the amount of 6262, 6264, 6240 and 6241 is roughly the same. to make a comparison for example the ratio between 6239 and 6264 steel cases produced is in the range of 8,8 : 1 .

obviously the exact amount of genuine PN dials produced is impossible to know ( as dials are not registered as cases ) . in any case my estimate grand total is in the range of 4000 for steel and maybe 500 for gold.

just around 1000 dials for free pushers and 200 for screw down ones was made around 2000 when : 1) the total amount of daytona produced was unknown to me ( and btw to 99,99 % of collectors) ; 2) in these years we have seen far more watches and a computati...

estimate was of around 4 - 5 : 1 dials for free pushers vs. screw down ( " non-oyster " vs. " oyster " ). ( grand total was 1200-1250 circa considering steel only ). the actual ratio in my current estimate for steel is a little different .. such as 3 : 1 ... 

......on this issue, i care little for the scarcity point...i just love those free pushers!!
