Is the second-largest city in Hokkaido, after Sapporo. The アイヌ (Ainu) called a local river Chiu Pet meaning " River of Waves ", but it was misunderstood as Chup Pet, meaning " Sun River ", and so the area became known as Asahi-kawa (Asahi meaning " mornin...  

I was in the Asahikawa area for one week earlier this month... it really has become one of my favorite destinations in Hokkaido. Over the next days I will be posting some photos from the area... definitely not my last visit to Asahikawa ; ) Casey

I've been many times to Sapporo but never here. I like what I see and I'm sure you are happy with all that snow! Great pics! fernando

The snow was great and according to the skiers the powder was fantastic. I took three day trips which I will post shortly... the good news is I just found a way to fly from Tokyo for about Yen 4,000 one way, so very reasonable destination... Casey

Asahi was founded in Osaka in 1889 as the Osaka Beer Company, the headquarters in Tokyo was designed by French designer Philippe Starck. The Beer Hall is considered one of Tokyo's most recognizable modern structures. OTOH... Sapporo Breweries Ltd. was fou...

I was pleased with the results in the Chubetsu River photo with the low sun reflecting off the water. In the next series we will visit the patchwork winter wonderland of Biei to the south east of Asahikawa. Casey
