I could not agree more, though the South Zone is not that dirt and is gorgeous even at a close view.
Even though I'd prefer living in any capital of Western Europe, Ipanema/Leblon is one of the most beautiful urban places on earth:
Not to mention the Lagoa, Botanic Garden etc.
But the ugly side of Rio is also better viewed from above. I did not have an idea of the sheer size of its slums until I started flying frequently to Rio in 2005:
