I’m gonna lay down my heavy load, down by the riverside

Life can be so complicated, and sometimes we just need relief from all the "stuff" that's going on.

High tide at the riverside is a fine time and place for a break from worries and woes.

We had a nice, warm, partially-overcast, but bright morning for our riverside walk.

In the photos below we are equidistant (about 2 miles each way) from the hills on the left, and the ocean to the right.

It's slack tide - about 6.5 feet high and neither flowing in nor out. Just calm.

The river is full from bank to bank most of the way; just the occasional little islands for branches, sticks and logs providing perches for the cormorants, egrets and herons.

The egrets are especially easy to spot - their white plumage instantly visible

while darker birds can be obscured by the glare off the water.

The reeds expose both colors.

As we walked on this quiet morning we listened for other birds... "I hear a hummer!" is my favorite phrase in response to short angry chirps... which is usually followed by "There he is"

A song sparrow caught our attention by flitting up down and around this large bush. It was curious about us and I got a half-dozen nice images.

A "rock" by the water's edge was supporting a lovely little spotted sandpiper which (when I got home and zoomed in)  turned out to be a boot, not a rock.

Both boots were there - why?

The hummer was doing all sorts of crazy motions in the tree and we realized he was making courtship overtures to another lady bird a bit higher up and across the main trunk.

"Hey, look at me!"

"Yawn, I must stay cool and ignore this fella"

Suddenly they shot off the tree, together,

rocketed up 100 feet, spun around and came back to the same branches.

She waited for more indications of his interest, while he probably was trying to catch his breath.

Thoroughly amused, we left them alone and walked back to the car,

stopping briefly to visit the great egret tree a mile or so down towards the water.

We also got a quick treat in the form of a 1959 Porsche 1600 Super if I read those badges correctly.

I hope you enjoyed this brief diversion from your everyday activities.

Cheers,

Cazalea
