My love of Patek started with misunderstanding and a heavily bruised ego. A young boy doesn't have to be convinced that a girl is pretty. He knows it because his sensory criteria are simply and completely satisfied, he sees her day-in and day-out and that girl is permanently attractive to him. She could be dressed poorly, fallen head-first into a mud puddle, screaming like crazy and she's still beautiful. With Patek (such as the simple Calatrava) I didn't appreciate the visual queues. To me, a Calatrava was the same as a dressy Rado, Raymond Weil, Frederique Constant, Oris... all adorned with old money advertising and storied histories. I was logically aware Patek Calatrava cost 20X but was willing to believe I'd stumbled upon a secret: the Raymond Weil Tradition might just be a beautiful female. As I walked and pondered the possibility, nearly every jewelry store window displayed stylistically similar watches in brands I'd never heard of but apparently had 200 years of Swiss tradition and excellence. ??
