Patek Philippe

Your input is always appreciated!

I recall about a year ago you provided me with a comprehensive answer to questions I posed regarding Breguet from a watchmaking perspective. And yes, it was a very useful response as I can still recall it, including both your affinity and respect for PP. I have tried on the exact flavor of 5396 that in most appropriate terms is courting ME, and I do love it, but it is not perfect. Since Im in the genesis stages of the watch buying process, I haven't even studied the dial yet so I haven't made the observations that MDG mentioned, but I can tell you for certain that my opinion of this watch is definitely less than perfect. So what is interesting is you mentioning how you prefer all of your PP dress watches over current AC or PC models. Now I don't know the pieces in your PP dress collection so I don't know if you're comparing annuals to say 5396, perpetuals to say 5327, or Calatravas to 5396. The later would be closer to my situation as outside of a second hand, 5010 has no complications. Now the following is my opinion, but as you said I can only satisfy my own opinion. While the little 5010 has no breguet numerals, no lunar phase, hell no date much less a calendar...I can say one thing about it that I can't say about 5396 - my opinion of the little gondolo is that it's very close to being perfect in a simplistic manner. I remember that the case is slightly convex so it fits nicely on my smallish wrist. I prefer the cathedral hands over dauphine.  Most importantly I LOVE the roman numerals and how perfectly they're embossed on the enamel dial if memory serves.  Conservative Art Deco, which as a native New Yorker of Italian descent suits me just fine.  A dear friend of mine and fellow enthusiast at 35 is a decade younger than myself thereby missing the age when 36mm was on the upper end of dress watch sizes and gentlemen sought to have their dress cuff effortlessly slip over their timepiece.  He enjoys reminding me that its a "Patek Cartier" or that I should get a Reverso for it's a better watch.  Not that I don't love what JLC does for I most certainly do....and Ill be the first to admit that objectively this is a very small and plain timepiece and I can easily see most people not giving it a second look...

now when it comes to keeping time, I thought I read somewhere that Patek makes a pretty good wristwatch.

I apologize for letting my passion get the better of my fingers, but Im beginning to get a clearer picture in the comprehension of my own motives

Best,

Mike
