To answer your questions...
The PP is so costly as it is a handmade watch, with a lot work done by a watchmakers and other craftsman.
The Rolex is in comparison ( we compare now just the movement ) mundane to a PP.
Each PP movement is made individually, as a Rolex is an assembly of parts.
You can see this also in the production numbers: Rolex makes over a million watches a year, PP just 35.000.
This showes also how much effort has been put into a watch.
Your second question: sturdyness.
Both are mechanical watches and to be treated as that.
The PP might be a bit more touchy than the Rolex as the movement is nearly always thinner than a Rolex one, but still both are touchy !
Example of a thick Rolex movement: the Rolex caliber 3135 is as thicker as the whole (!) Ellipse watch.
But Rolex, as a very established manufacturer, still independant, with an altruistic task, makes good watches.
It simply feeds a different need than a PP does.
And now the overall decisive factor: taste !
Choose what you like more, simply.
Regards
Moritz
P S : In German exists the word mondaen, but with the opposite meaning: in German it means, lavish, opulent, elegant.

and I have had no bad experience with them during the past 25 years. At the moment I own 9 of them and will get at least three more. At the same time I have just two Pateks and I have had problems with both. Still, without a second thought my reply to you...
Problems
By: dr.kol : September 11th, 2010-12:30
The other one did not function even one day after I bought it new from an AD. The rotor was jamming. The watch was sent to Geneva and I got it back after 10-11 months. It did not function any better and the AD confirmed PP in Geneva that the watch is not ...
Patek
By: Timertom : September 11th, 2010-10:21
I would choose the Patek if I was in your shoes, specially knowing you already have the Rolex watches to wear for more casual occasions. At the same time, do note the Patek is not going to be even close to as robust, or ruggedly constructed as the Rolex D...
Patek vs Rolex
By: vintageguy : September 12th, 2010-19:19
I have both brands. I recently traded a vintage Rolex 1675 GMT for a vintage Calatrava 96. I'll take any Patek over any Rolex anytime. I don't worry about wearing my Pateks for normal activities. if I need a real beater for hiking, etc., I don't even wear...
The value equation
By: Le Chef : September 14th, 2010-11:44
If you look at the cost of a Patek 5712/1a and then the 5712G or R you will see that the price is pretty close. Which means either a disproportionate % of the value is in the labor and in the movement or Patek is very clever with pricing. Platinum throws ...
