To use a watch underwater you would need a watch of at least 120 meters to take it for swimming in a pool or ocean. To go beyond that you need a real divers watch of at least 300 mm. Otherwise, I would leave the watches in a dry place while you dive or swim.

For sure it has nothing to do with the movement
The original 3712 was water resistant to 60 meters. Perhaps Patek did not want to change that. One reason might be that 3712/5712 is a remarkably slim watch and adding the water resistance to 120 meters would have added the thickness of the watch. Best, K...

I love my 3712!
It's even slimmer the 5712 and I do not know any other sportive watch with three complications that would be less than 9 mm thick and having three complication. Best, Kari
Tropical strap
If you're going to be splashing around in water remember to order the tropical strap from your AD. It works very nicely on the 5712 G or R.
Tropical strap is included with the 5712 G & R
It is a part of the package when you buy this reference.
Depends on the age of the watch
For the 1st year the tropical strap was not included with the watch. I had to persuade my AD to get me one.
Because of the thin case:
The thin case doesn't leave space for the same waterproof display around the little pushers, compared to the 5726 or the 5980. Smaller parts inside these pushers (seals especially) => lower waterproof resistance :)
