Several thoughts
First, the G is a big improvement on the J. What comes across as a cold dial in the J comes across as clinically cool in the G. I love the Breguet numerals and I think that works really well. The watch now has much more personality than the original issue.
However, there are some niggles. The hands do look very ordinary. For such a watch, I would have hoped for something more elegant. Also, the pushers are not polished and are also very square. For my personal taste, I think polished and rounded would have worked better. To my eye, the pushers looked odd....though nobody I was with thought so.......
No doubt that this watch will be successful. However, and I know we have discussed this exact issue, for me I would take the 5070G over the 5170G every time. I know that there are all the arguments why the 5170g is the more desirable watch. I know if you did a tick-box, the 5170g would out point the 5070g, but I see the former model as the king. A bit like Sugar Ray vrs Tommy Hearns.
5070 is the Sugar Ray.
When Rolex made the Paul Newman dial variation for its Daytona, it eventually made the watch iconic. To a Rolex collector, teh PN Daytona has something very special about it. The 5070 is the Patek Paul Newman.
